1998 Golden GateAway

New Worlds for New Explorers

The 1998 Golden GateAway highlights and honors the role of the New Explorers in opening new gateways to New Worlds, from the submicroscopic to the super-cosmic. These New Explorers have the opportunity to honor the courage and dedication of the the early explorers of our frontiers, and to be principals in Mankind's ongoing Adventure of Discovery on Earth and beyond.

The GateAway will be an extraordinary opportunity to bring together distinguished explorers in many fields, and to share the thrill of discovering new worlds to explore. This event is presented by the Northern California Chapter of the Explorers Club.

The Program

Friday, 16 October 1998 (Evening) Exotics Encounter
Evening. World Trade Club, Ferry Building, San Francisco

An evening of California wine, exotic food, and a chance to meet your fellow explorers from near and far. The club occupies the third floor of the historic Ferry Building and has a panoramic view of the bay, from Treasure Island to Coit Tower. This evening we will be joined by some of our distinguished speakers, and you will have a chance to bid in our silent auction on some exciting and exotic artifacts. Explorers who have authored books will be there to sell and autograph their work as well. It's not a formal dinner, but you'll get so much to eat and drink you probably won't care!

Saturday, 17 October 1998 (Day) Getaway Forays
During the day. Various locations, San Francisco Bay Area

Choose from a variety of local expeditions such as an introduction to ornithology, a tour of one of our local museums, a hike along the shore, and others. Explore places in the Bay Area you've never seen, or fall in love with an old favorite all over again. Each foray will last part of the day, and will be led by a member of the Northern California Chapter. (The leaders promised us they'd get you back in time for the Grand Gathering.) Families and friends are welcome on these free forays (yes, free!), but everyone must register in advance since space on all events is limited. You register for the forays by simply returning the stamped postcard included in your ticket package. The package will describe all of the forays, including times and lengths of each event, maps, where to meet, what to wear, etc. If you do not wish to attend other GateAway events you are welcome to go on the forays, but you must request a foray package from the address on the reverse side to register.

Saturday, 17 October 1998 (Evening) Grand Gathering of Explorers
Evening. Gold Ballroom, Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco

A full-out no-holds-barred take-no-prisoners formal (black tie, native dress, decorations) banquet. The evening will start with an hors d'oeuvres and special exhibits about expeditions and exploring. We will then move into the main ballroom where under crystal chandeliers we will dine and be treated to presentations by our distinguished speakers, have a surprise or two we can't tell you about, and end with a wild animal display. We guarantee you will be thrilled.
