A series of expeditions was carried out to the area off Pt. Sur, south of Monterey, California, during the fall of 2004. The expeditions were done as three 3-day trips from Monterey aboard the Cordell Explorer. Preliminary information and a few photos are available by clicking the above links. The expeditions explored and documented shallow pinnacles on the feature known as Schmieder Bank., seen on the right side of the computer bathymetric image below: The goals were: (1) to obtain specimens, photographs, and observations of areas last seen during the 1988-89 expeditions, and (2) to examine shallow areas newly discovered in recent high-resolution bathymetric surveys. Direct examination and specimen collection were done by divers using scuba, including rebreathers. Both goals were met during the expeditions.
